Being directly on the Edisto has its advantages, short paddles are as easy as jumping in one of our onsite canoes or kayaks and taking a short paddle around the cove just upstream of our private landing.
We have two docks, one directly on the river and a second shared dock in the boat launch area. House guests get exclusive access to the river dock and Campers get to access the boat ramp dock through a trail next to the pond.
The cove (just upstream to the left) is lined with ancient Bald Cypress, Tupelo, and Black Willow which you can paddle through depending on river heights. The higher the river the faster the flow. When the water is very low in the summer months areas of the sandy bottom are exposed, the entire river has a sandy bottom. The paddle around the cove takes around 30 minutes and perfect for relaxing and taking in nature, plenty of bird watching and even fish jumping at times. The Atlantic Sturgeon spawn in the Edisto all summer, they may scare you as they can be up to 6ft long and jump completely out of the water to refill their air bladders, definitely a sight to behold!
A short quarter mile paddle up the main river and to the right is an ancient grove of Bald Cypress estimated to be over 1000 year old. Old growth trees of this caliber are a rare site to behold, the cypress knees are nearly 12ft tall, nearly the tallest on record. We don't know exactly how old the trees are but similar trees on the Black River in NC were calculated at 2,624 years old!
The 1/2 acre pond on the property is perfect for kids to learn how to paddle with no current, we let our young ones paddle in there all the time.
With our boats we do not let guest take them downstream, the current is strong enough that you will never make it back. The next portage is 1.5 miles downstream and nothing but swamp land in between. However, we do have enough boats for up to 8 people at a time to paddle the cove if you wish. We recommend you contact Edisto River Adventures for river floats, or Carolina Heritage Outfitters for guided or self guided tours of the winding river.
Company Policy- Any guests using our gear are 100% responsible for their own safety and the return or recovery of all gear. Tipping a canoe in the fast moving river current can be a life threatening situation which nobody should take lightly, life jackets are to be worn at all times.
